My child starts kindergarten for the first time: 3 strategies for a healthy transition

Among the developmental stages of each child, entering kindergarten stands out as a very important and significant moment, not only because it is one of the first steps towards independence, but also because of its impact on future stages of life. The transition from home to a new social and educational environment can be both exciting and overwhelming for both children and their parents. This is where preparation for children’s ages and stages becomes especially important.

Supporting and facilitating the kindergarten entry stage.

Entering kindergarten is a big step for our children and accompanying them is vital for them. Have you already gone through this stage? Remember the tantrums for not wanting to be separated from you? This is normal, as it is their first time in a new place, with friends and games, far away from you and home. Helping them in this change is key. Not only do they make friends and learn to share, but they also awaken their curiosity and desire to explore new things.

And not only that, going to kindergarten also helps them begin to stand up for themselves, building their confidence and security. By accompanying them, we show them that this new world, although big and a bit scary, can be full of incredible adventures.

You may ask, how can I help my children in this new stage? How do I make them feel secure so they can grow well? Here are 3 simple strategies you can use:

Strategy 1: Establish new routines ahead of time.

Starting the garden means changing routines at home, such as getting up, eating breakfast, getting dressed and going out. In order for children to adapt better, it is good to anticipate these changes. We suggest that, a few weeks before starting the garden, you introduce a routine similar to the one you will have when school starts. This includes adjusting sleeping, eating and home activity schedules. Following these new routines helps prepare your child for day-to-day life in the garden and gives him or her security and stability.

Strategy 2: Encouraging independence through play

Play is a powerful tool in the stages of child development, we have seen this in previous notes such as “The importance of play throughout life”, but it is especially key when it comes to fostering independence and self-confidence.

Through games that simulate activities they will do for kindergarten, such as dressing themselves, preparing their backpack or interacting with other children, they will be practicing essential skills in a fun, no-pressure way. This approach not only prepares children for the challenges they will face, but also teaches them to associate learning and the new experience with positive emotions.

Strategy 3: Involve the child in kindergarten readiness.

Finally, a good way to get your child excited and reduce their anxiety is to get involved in preparing for this new stage. Involve him in everything: let him choose his backpack, clothes and school supplies.

Visiting the garden before you start helps you become familiar with the place and reduces fear of the unknown. Understanding what to expect from this new place and at what age the children are going is important and needs to be discussed clearly and happily.

In short, entering kindergarten is an exciting stage in children’s lives. Using strategies for a healthy and positive transition not only helps children, but also prepares them for future stages of their lives. As parents, our support and guidance are key at these important times. Let us accompany them with love and patience, knowing that each new experience is a step in their growth.
